Thomas H. Burton, III


A graduate of Texas A&M University and the University of Houston Law Center, Mr. Burton has been a trial lawyer since 1999 when he was licensed by the State Bar of Texas.  He has appeared in trial and appellate courts all across Texas and before federal courts in the 3rd and 5th Circuits.  Mr. Burton’s experience after law school began in the insurance industry with Travelers Insurance and continued as outside counsel for several large nationwide carriers.  He also led a national nonprofit as general counsel in charge of trial and appellate litigation, public policy and legislative advocacy.  After heading his own firm for 15 years, he returned to corporate and insurance law full-time in 2022.  Currently, he works on litigated matters involving large risk and catastrophic losses.

During the time running his own practice, Mr. Burton handled a wide range of client matters in addition to civil and contract litigation, including personal injury, medical malpractice, criminal law, civil rights litigation, family law, and probate cases.  Mr. Burton’s breadth and scope of experience allows him to navigate complex legal issues interconnected with various areas of the law.

Personal Injury  & Wrongful Death

Represented families of deceased inmates in wrongful death suit and federal civil rights litigation against Sheriff and Jail in Fort Bend County, Texas; achieved favorable settlements in 2 cases.

Represented family of hit and run victim in Liberty County, Texas, resulting in multi-million dollar award.

Represented Plaintiff in medical malpractice case involving lasting injuries from broken glass tube improperly used during c-section, resulting in favorable settlement. 

General Civil Litigation

Sued and obtained monetary verdict against Rice University for failure to bestow certificate or issue refund to client who had completed all required components of business skills course.

Insurance Law

Represented insurance carrier in successful appeal of auto-manufacturer’s denial of indemnity claim.

Represented insurance company at trial and on appeal, upholding trial judgment where carrier was found to have properly denied request to defend uncovered allegations.

Construction Law

Represented commercial and residential builder in several lawsuits arising out of alleged violations of Chapter 162, Texas Property Code.   Advised industry clients re: best practices.

Trucking Accident Litigation

Represented trucking company in defense of wrongful death suit and successfully defended alleged violations of Motor Vehicle Safety Act before administrative office of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Administration.
