OSHA Announces Penalty Increases for 2025

03.03.2025

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has increased the dollar amounts of its civil penalties for violations for 2025.

Effective January 15, 2025, the maximum penalty for “serious,” “other-than-serious,” and “posting requirements” violations is $16,550 per violation. Previously, the maximum per-violation penalty for each of these categories was $16,131. For failure to abate, the highest penalty similarly rose from $16,131 to $16,550 per day beyond the abatement deadline.

For willful or repeated violations, the maximum penalty increased from $161,323 to $165,514 per violation.

OSHA’s penalty rate hikes are in accordance with the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act Improvements Act of 2015, which directs government agencies to adjust civil penalties for inflation so that they will continue to be an effective deterrent.

The increase in civil penalties is a reminder of the high costs associated with failure to comply with OSHA regulations. By maintaining compliance with OSHA regulations, employers can help ensure a healthy workplace while avoiding costly penalties.
